" finest, columnist ralph, and ross. ross, i'm going to start with you. you think both sides have decided it's in their political interest to go over the fiscal cliff. is that right? >> yeah, you never want to rule a deal off the table because we have lived through so many rounds that have ended in deals in the last couple years, but in this case, i think democrats think they get a better deal on policy by going over the cliff. that they end up getting more in taxes with less in spending cuts than they would get if they had to cut a deal right now. and republicans have persuaded themselves not completely convincingly in my view, but they have persuaded themselves it's much better to accept slightly higher taxes that they themselves don't have to vote for directly, even though they'll still be casting a vote for new tax rates, they'll be able to say, well, taxes have already gone up and we're just voting to cut them. so that's sort of how, at least, i think both sides are persuading themselves to sort of tip-toe off the cliff. >> and charles, i know you think republicans have more to lose

" columnist ross douthat the and cornell. the president said he wanted to see a straight up-or-down vote. as we mentioned that, will happen on monday in the senate. he could lose that up-or-down vote. >> i think you're likely to see something come out of the senate. you have to pay attention, especially on the senate side to tone. what minority leader mcconnell was saying was tone was right. i think you'll see something come out of the senate but i think the problem comes on the house side, whether or not speaker boehner what it send theirs way to go an up or down vote without having the majority of the majority. >> ross, this is what speaker boehner said he wanted to push off to the senate. nothing helps us answer the big question, can his speaker bring his conference on board? could house republicans now be ready to accept a compromise, even if they don't like what's in it? >> i think a lot depends on what the democrats are willing to give at this point. the democrats sort of have an interesting dilemma where it's the sort of bird in the hand issue. i think if you do have something com

on an up or down vote, without having a majority of the majority. >> and ross, this is what speaker boehner said he wants to push off to the senate. but nothing we saw today can answer the big question. could house republicans now be ready to accept a compromise even if they don't like what is in it? >> i think a lot depends on what the democrats are willing to give at this point. and the democrats sort of have an interesting dilemma where it is sort of the bird in the hand issue, right? i think if you do have something come out of the senate where the tax threshhold goes up to $400,000, rather than 250,000, where there is some concession to democrats and republicans, i think there would be a lot of pressure on boehner to bring it to a vote and to have it pass again. it probably wouldn't pass with the majority of the majority. it would end up passing with a chunk of republicans, and a lot of democrats. but if the democrats just want to push things and say no, it is 250,000, i mean, that might not get out of the senate. and if it gets out of the senate i don't think it gets to the house. >>
